Driven by an unyielding call from God, he ventured into the uncharted wilderness of Colombia in 1961, seeking to connect with the enigmatic Motilone/Barí tribe, renowned for their fierce nature and resistance to external influence.

Initially met with suspicion and hostility, Olson's unwavering perseverance and genuine desire to comprehend their unique customs gradually earned their trust and acceptance. The Barí, who affectionately called him "Bruchko," warmly embraced him into their community, forging an unbreakable bond that would shape the course of his life. He immersed himself in their language and culture, learning to communicate effectively and building bridges of understanding between their world and his own. This cross-cultural exchange laid the foundation for a remarkable transformation that would impact not only the Barí but also countless other indigenous communities across Colombia.

Olson's mission extended far beyond evangelism. Recognizing the tribe's lack of a written language, he spearheaded the development of a writing system for them, facilitating the monumental task of translating the Bible into their native tongue. This endeavor not only opened the door to a deeper understanding of Christian teachings but also empowered the Barí to document their rich cultural heritage, preserving their stories and traditions for future generations. Through divine intervention and international pressure, he was miraculously released, but his time in captivity had profoundly impacted both him and those he encountered. In the decades since, Olson's ministry has expanded to encompass 19 different tribes, encompassing a population of over 200,000 people.
